Why Knowing Supplements Matters or Trusting Someone Who Does

Recently, I came across an advertisement for a supplement called TrueForm Fascial Release. My first reaction was skepticism.
The advertisement had nearly every feature I have learned to distrust: dramatic promises, a newly discovered cause of chronic pain, language suggesting that conventional medicine has overlooked the obvious, and a proprietary formula positioned as the answer.
It had all the makings of exaggerated supplement marketing.
And yet, when I looked more closely, I discovered something important: beneath the marketing was a scientifically interesting idea and a surprisingly thoughtful formula.
That does not mean the claims are proven. It does mean the product deserves more careful analysis than simply labeling it a scam.
This is why knowing supplements matters.
Consumers should not have to choose between believing everything a company says and dismissing everything it says. There is a third path: examine the science, study the ingredients, question the dosages, identify the exaggerations, and then make an informed decision.
The Claim: Is Fibromyalgia Caused by Fascia?
TrueForm’s central argument is that fibromyalgia pain may originate, at least partially, in the fascia.
Fascia is the thin but extensive network of connective tissue that surrounds and moves between our muscles, organs, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures. It is not simply packing material beneath the skin. Fascia is living tissue containing collagen, fluid, blood vessels, immune cells, and sensory nerve endings.
Researchers increasingly recognize that fascia may play a role in pain, mobility, inflammation, force transmission, and communication throughout the body.
That part of the company’s message is reasonable.
There is legitimate scientific interest in whether changes in fascia—such as excessive tension, inflammation, densification, restricted movement, or impaired fluid balance—may contribute to persistent pain.
Some forms of myofascial therapy have also been shown to improve pain, stiffness, sleep, and quality of life in certain people with fibromyalgia.
However, this does not prove that fibromyalgia is caused by dehydrated fascia.
Fibromyalgia remains a complex condition. Current research points toward a combination of altered pain processing, central sensitization, sleep disruption, autonomic nervous system changes, genetics, inflammation, small-fiber nerve abnormalities, psychological stress, and possibly connective-tissue dysfunction.
Fascia may be part of the picture.
It is not yet established as the single cause.
That distinction matters.
Where the Marketing Goes Too Far
The advertisement essentially presents the following argument:
Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain.
Fascia contains many pain-sensitive nerves.
Fascia requires water and hyaluronic acid to move properly.
Therefore, fibromyalgia is caused by dehydrated fascia.
And because this supplement contains hyaluronic acid and connective-tissue ingredients, it supposedly repairs the root cause.
The first several statements contain elements of truth.
The final conclusion has not been clinically established.
This is a common pattern in supplement advertising. A company begins with real science, connects several plausible biological facts, and then takes one additional step that the research has not yet proven.
That extra step is where consumers need to pay attention.
An ingredient may support connective tissue without treating fibromyalgia. A compound may influence inflammation without correcting the cause of chronic pain. A study involving arthritis, skin hydration, or wound healing cannot automatically be applied to fibromyalgia.
Scientific plausibility is not the same as clinical proof.
The Formula Is Better Than the Marketing
Despite my concerns about the advertising, I was impressed by the logic of the formula.
The listed ingredients include:

Boswellia extract

Hyaluronic acid

Copper

Manganese
This is not a random collection of trendy ingredients. Each ingredient relates, at least theoretically, to connective tissue, collagen, inflammation, circulation, fluid balance, tissue remodeling, or musculoskeletal health.
Let us look at them more carefully.
Hyaluronic Acid: 300 Milligrams
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in joints, skin, eyes, and connective tissue. It helps tissues retain water and contributes to lubrication and structural support.
There is some human evidence that oral hyaluronic acid may support joint comfort and mobility, particularly in people with osteoarthritis.
Three hundred milligrams is a meaningful amount compared with many supplements.
The unanswered question is whether oral hyaluronic acid specifically rehydrates fascia and improves fibromyalgia pain.
That has not been clearly demonstrated.
The ingredient is credible.
The marketing claim is ahead of the evidence.
Bamboo Extract and Silica: 140 Milligrams
Silicon plays a role in connective-tissue and collagen biology. Bamboo extract is often used as a natural source of silica.
However, supplement labels can make this confusing.
A label might list 140 milligrams of bamboo extract and state that it contains 70 percent silica. That does not necessarily mean the consumer is receiving 98 milligrams of biologically available elemental silicon.
Bamboo extract, silica, and elemental silicon are not interchangeable terms.
A responsible company should clearly identify the amount and form of the active nutrient.
The ingredient makes sense in a connective-tissue formula, but the labeling should be transparent.
Gotu Kola Extract: 250 Milligrams
Gotu kola has a long history of use for circulation, skin healing, wound repair, and connective-tissue support.
Certain compounds within gotu kola may influence collagen production and tissue remodeling.
The problem is that “250 milligrams of gotu kola extract” does not tell us enough.
A high-quality formula should identify whether the extract is standardized for compounds such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, or total triterpenes.
Without standardization, two gotu kola extracts can have very different potency.
The amount is potentially reasonable, but the quality of the extract matters as much as the number of milligrams.
Serrapeptase: 40,000 SPU
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme, meaning it breaks down proteins.
It is commonly marketed for inflammation, swelling, mucus, scar tissue, and fibrin buildup. The idea is that it may help the body clear damaged proteins and inflammatory debris.
The story is compelling.
The human evidence is not especially strong.
Serrapeptase has not been convincingly proven to dissolve fascial adhesions or treat fibromyalgia.
It also raises safety concerns. Because it may influence clotting or protein breakdown, serrapeptase should be used cautiously by people taking blood thinners, aspirin, antiplatelet medications, or other supplements that may increase bleeding risk.
It may also need to be discontinued before surgery or dental procedures.
This is probably the ingredient in the formula that deserves the greatest scrutiny.
Bromelain: 200 Milligrams
Bromelain is an enzyme obtained from pineapple.
It has anti-inflammatory and proteolytic properties and may help with swelling, bruising, sinus issues, and certain forms of musculoskeletal discomfort.
Two hundred milligrams may be useful, but enzyme activity is often more important than simple weight.
A good label should provide enzyme activity units, not only milligrams.
Bromelain can also increase bleeding risk, especially when combined with serrapeptase, aspirin, blood thinners, or high-dose fish oil.
This does not make bromelain a bad ingredient.
It means the formula should not be presented as harmless simply because it is natural.
Boswellia Extract: 200 Milligrams
Boswellia is one of the stronger ingredients in the formula.
It has meaningful research supporting its use for joint discomfort and inflammatory conditions, particularly osteoarthritis.
However, the effectiveness of Boswellia depends heavily on standardization.
Two hundred milligrams of a highly concentrated extract may be effective. Two hundred milligrams of an unspecified extract may be less impressive.
Consumers should look for information about total boswellic acids, AKBA content, or a branded standardized extract.
Again, ingredient quality matters.
Boron: 3 Milligrams
Three milligrams of boron is a sensible nutritional dose.
Boron may support bone health, mineral metabolism, hormone balance, and a healthy inflammatory response.
It is not a treatment for fibromyalgia, but it fits logically within a musculoskeletal and connective-tissue formula.
Copper and Manganese
Copper and manganese are trace minerals involved in connective-tissue enzymes and collagen metabolism.
Copper supports an enzyme involved in collagen and elastin cross-linking. Manganese contributes to connective-tissue formation and antioxidant defense.
The listed amounts—1.5 milligrams of copper and 2.5 milligrams of manganese—are reasonable, but consumers should consider how much they already receive from multivitamins and other supplements.
More is not always better, especially with trace minerals.
Can It All Fit in One Capsule?
This is one of the simplest ways an experienced supplement consumer can evaluate a formula.
The milligram-based ingredients alone add up to more than 1,000 milligrams, even before accounting for serrapeptase, excipients, flow agents, and the capsule itself.
That would be extremely difficult to fit into one standard capsule.
The formula would more realistically require two very large capsules.
When a company presents a complex formula, consumers should check the Supplement Facts panel carefully.
Is the listed amount per capsule or per serving?
Does the serving consist of one capsule, two capsules, or more?
This may seem like a small detail, but it reveals whether the marketing language matches the physical reality of the product.
What Does “Patented Formula” Mean?
The company also uses proprietary or patented language.
It is possible to patent a supplement formula, a delivery system, a manufacturing method, a specific combination of ingredients, or a particular use.
However, the phrase “patented formula” does not prove that the product works.
It also does not necessarily mean the entire finished supplement is patented.
Sometimes a company uses:

A patented individual ingredient

A patent-pending application
-
A trademarked product name
-
A proprietary blend
-
A patent involving a manufacturing process
-
Or a patent covering something only loosely connected to the finished product
A company claiming a patent should be willing to provide the patent number and explain exactly what is patented.
Consumers should also remember that a patent is a legal protection. It is not a clinical trial, medical endorsement, or guarantee of effectiveness.
Is TrueForm a Scam?
I would not call the formula itself fraudulent.
The ingredients have a coherent scientific theme. The formula appears to have been designed by someone who understands connective tissue, inflammation, enzymes, collagen metabolism, and joint health.
My concern is not primarily the ingredients.
My concern is the certainty of the claims.
The advertisement appears to take an emerging area of research and present it as a settled discovery. It suggests that dehydrated fascia is the overlooked cause of fibromyalgia and that this particular combination corrects the problem.
The research does not yet support that level of confidence.
This is not unusual in the supplement industry.
Sometimes a genuinely intelligent product is hidden beneath exaggerated marketing.
Could Someone With Fibromyalgia Try It?
For some people, this formula may be worth a cautious and carefully monitored trial.
That decision should depend on medications, medical conditions, sensitivity to supplements, and the advice of a physician or pharmacist.
Extra caution is warranted for anyone taking:

Xarelto

Plavix
-
Aspirin

Regular anti-inflammatory medication

High-dose fish oil

Blood-pressure medication

Diabetes medication

Sedatives

Or other products affecting bleeding
Anyone preparing for surgery or dental work should also discuss serrapeptase and bromelain with a healthcare professional.
A person trying the product should keep other variables as stable as possible and track specific outcomes:

Daily pain level

Morning stiffness
-
Sleep quality
-
Fatigue
-
Mobility
-
Number of severe pain days
-
Use of rescue medication
-
Bruising or bleeding
-
Digestive side effects
That creates a more informed personal experiment than simply deciding after two days that a product either worked or failed.
The Future of Natural Biology
When I founded Natural Biology, the goal was to help people find nutritional products that made sense.
But the longer I have worked with supplements, the more convinced I have become that consumers may need something even more valuable than another bottle.
They need trustworthy analysis.
They need someone willing to say:
This ingredient is promising, but this claim is exaggerated.
This dosage makes sense, but the form is unclear.
This product may help, but the research does not prove it treats a disease.
This formula is thoughtfully designed, but it may interact with medications.
This company is using legitimate science, but it is stretching the conclusions.
Perhaps the future of Natural Biology is not simply selling supplements.
Perhaps it is helping people understand them.
The supplement industry is filled with good ingredients, weak ingredients, outstanding formulations, meaningless proprietary blends, honest companies, aggressive marketers, emerging science, and outright nonsense.
Most consumers are not trained to distinguish among them.
That is where careful analysis becomes important.
My goal is not to tell people what they must buy or what they must avoid.
My goal is to give them enough information to make a wiser decision.
TrueForm Fascial Release is a good example.
The fascia theory is scientifically interesting.
The ingredients are thoughtfully chosen.
Some dosages appear reasonable.
Several details require greater transparency.
The potential for medication interactions is real.
The claim that dehydrated fascia is the established cause of fibromyalgia is not proven.
And the finished product itself has not been shown in rigorous clinical trials to treat fibromyalgia.
That does not mean it cannot help someone.
It means we should describe it honestly.
There is a great difference between saying, “This formula may support connective tissue, mobility, and a healthy inflammatory response,” and saying, “We have discovered the real cause of fibromyalgia, and this supplement fixes it.”
One is responsible interpretation.
The other is marketing.
Knowing the difference is why knowing supplements matters.
